Johnson contact lens comparison `forbidden`
24.09.2008
A contact lens company has been prevented from marketing its products as being the equivalent of the popular brand Acuvue.

A company promoting its contact lenses as an alternative to Johnson & Johnson`s (J&J`s) Acuvue has been banned from doing so.

Ocular Insight`s Clear 58 had been cleared for marketing by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) but, a spokesperson for J&J said, this did not mean it was an approved product.

Naomi Kelman, president of Vistakon - a division of J&J Vision Care - said marketing approval did not ensure the product`s safety.

"In the interest of patient safety, we felt an urgent need to address these misleading claims as quickly as possible," she added.

"The proprietary lens design and manufacturing process of all Acuvue brand contact lenses are unique."

Clear 58 has been promoted by its maker as a generic version of Acuvue.

The New York high court told Ocular Insight to cease marketing the products as being approved by the FDA, as being approved by the FDA as an equivalent to Acuvue, that it is an equivalent to Acuvue or is identical to Acuvue.

The Acuvue brand includes 1 Day Acuvue and 1 Day Acuvue Moist.
