Healthy diet "can lower cataract risk"

05.12.2014

Following a healthy diet can help women lower the risk of developing cataracts in later life, new research has suggested.

According to a recent report in the Archives of Ophthalmology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals, women who eat foods rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals may have a lower risk of developing the most common type of cataract.

Dr Julie Mares, from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, said estimates of daily food and nutrition intake were made from previous responses to a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire used at the time as part of the Women"s Health Initiative study.

She explained: "There are limited studies published to date in which nutritional risk factors are evaluated concurrently with a comprehensive set of other lifestyle, ocular health and physical risk factors."

It comes after experts at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center claimed they have found a way to use a new type of gene therapy to prevent blindness caused by retinitis pigmentosa, which may give hope to the hundreds of thousands of people who suffer from the condition worldwide.ADNFCR-1853-ID-19838148-ADNFCR
