Patients interested in laser eye surgery to correct their vision could have access to a new technology by 2009, two companies have announced.
Two eye health companies are combining forces to bring new technology into the laser eye surgery sector.
Global eye health company Bausch & Lomb and 20/10 Perfect Vision AG, the femtosecond laser developer, say they intend to form a joint venture focused on the laser vision correction industry.
The joint venture will bring 20/10 Perfect Vision`s new technology for the correction of presbyopia to patients, utilising Bausch & Lomb`s development experience and worldwide commercial reach.
Bausch & Lomb chairman and chief executive officer Gerald Ostrov said: "20/10 Perfect Vision`s development of presbyopia-correcting treatments using its Femtec femtosecond laser … holds tremendous potential to stimulate growth in corneal refractive surgery.
Presbyopia is where the lens of the eye becomes less flexible with age and is usually treated by prescribing
contact lenses - for example,
Focus Dailies - or glasses.
It means the eye cannot focus on near objects as easily as it could previously.
