The future of
contact lenses is to wear them inside the eye, according to a scientist.
Daily contact lenses - currently the choice of millions of people thanks to their convenience and hygiene benefits - could become redundant with new technological advances.
Professor James Wolffsohn says a one-off operation to place a permanent lens into the eye could be available within a few years.
Scientists are trying to develop flexible lenses that respond to movement of the eye`s muscles.
Mr Wolffsohn said: "Everyone over 45 would benefit because it means they will be able to see distance and near absolutely naturally.
"It is the true definition of a bionic eye."
However, the thought of eye surgery may not be for everyone and
contact lenses are a comfortable option for many people.
In addition to this, the price of contact lenses
over the internet means they are convenient and cheap to order and have delivered.
