Saline or tap water

From: Jan-Peter Onstwedder

Comments

The package insert for Bausch & Lomb elite productsContact Lenses clearly states to use tap water to rinse the lenses after cleaning and before disinfecting. It also says to rinse the lens case with hot tap water and allowing it to air dry. All other advise I've ever heard says not to use water and to use saline instead.

Who's right? Why?

Thats a good observation. There is increasing risk of :microbial contamination from tap water, particularily a tough organism named "acanamoeba" which can survive even chlorinated tap water, and although rare, a devestating eye infection. In my practice I always advise the use of saline for rinsing lenes, even hard ones. As far as your lens case, you probobly stand a much better chance of contamination from an unwashed case as you do from washing it in water. use very hot water, and scrub occasionally with an old toothbrush, then air-dry it. most cases are manufactured to be boilable. (not with the lenses in it)
