Tips for keeping eyes healthy have been given by the American Academy of Opthalmology.
The Academy urged people not to smoke, pointing out that this has been linked to age-related macular degeneration and also cataracts.
Contact lenses need to be kept properly and not wetted with out-of-date solutions or saliva.
It also stressed the importance of having proper eye protection when playing sports and when in the sun.
The Academy said that it is "critical" to protect eyes when playing games such as baseball and hockey and also pointed out that blocking harmful UV rays with sunglasses helps to guard against cancer in the skin surrounding the eyes, damage to retinas, wrinkles and eye cancer.
It is also important to wear eye protection when carrying out domestic activities such as cleaning and repairs.
Furthermore, people were urged to eat a healthy diet and have their eyes checked regularly.
An ePR source wrote an article for Best Syndication stressing the importance of taking good care of contact lenses.
The author said that many problems contact lens wearers experience could be prevented by handling their lenses as they should do.
