Sainsbury"s has withdrawn its facility to buy contact lenses online.
Its contact lens website has now closed.
A spokesperson told Optician Online that it withdrew from the online contact lens market "as part of a wide ranging review" and said it is too soon to say if it will restore the service in future.
The supermarket chain said that it plans to expand its range of non-food products that can be bought online.
In related contact lens business news, Bausch & Lomb is reportedly looking for a partner to crack the market in India.
According to mydigitalfc.com, the firm is seeking an Indian partner to try to capitalise on the market in the country and enter it by 2011.
Harish Natarajan, managing director for India and south-east Asia, said that the Indian market is still volatile and that Bausch & Lomb wants to ally with an organisation that has a "decent grounding" in the field.
