For those who need custom coloured contact lenses they should make sure they are made and fitted by a specialist, an expert has said.
In an article for Illinois-based publication the Herald News, optometrist James Cutler explained that eye doctors can fit people with contact lenses which can then be coloured as required.
He warned that people with asymmetric eyes may suffer if they try to wear mass produced coloured contact lenses and they will get a far better fit and match from a specialist eye care practitioner.
"If you or someone you know has a need for custom contact lenses, see an eye doctor who specialises in the fitting of custom contacts," Dr Cutler wrote.
He advised against wearing mass produced contact lenses bought from a costume shop or over the internet without first consulting an eye professional.
A similar warning has been given by the Consumer Reports Blog.
Parents were urged not to let their children wear coloured contact lenses as a fashion accessory unless they were provided on prescription.
