Unprescribed Halloween contact lenses "are dangerous"

Unprescribed Halloween contact lenses "are dangerous"

By Alexa Kaczka

People wanting to use contact lenses as part of their Halloween costumes have been reminded to visit an expert first.

The Canadian College of Opticians told people to visit an eyecare professional first if they want to wear novelty contact lenses to change the look of their eyes.

Wearing contact lenses that have not been prescribed or properly fitted could lead to infection and allergic reactions.

The college observed that people may want to make a dramatic change to their appearance, perhaps by giving themselves "vampire eyes".

Kent Ashby, who chairs the organisation, said: "We urge people to choose Halloween costumes that don"t have the potential to harm their eyes."

It is not the only safety warning that has been given over Halloween costume contact lenses.

Jonathan Gording of the California Optometric Association and professional contact lens fitter for Hollywood films has made the same statement.

He told the Signal that people should not wear unfitted contact lenses and ought to see a professional if they do want to change the appearance of their eyes.
