Monocles back in fashion

Monocles back in fashion

Vision Express has started stocking monocles in its Oxford Street store in London due to an increase in their popularity, reports Optometry Today.

Vision Express chief executive Bryan Magrath said: "To our surprise we"ve had dozens of requests from customers in the last few months, so we thought we"d bring back the monocle on a trial basis. We"re as puzzled as anyone by the interest. I guess it"s one of those inexplicable fashion things."

In recent times the eyepieces have been most famously worn by eccentric retired boxer Chris Eubank and astronomer Sir Patrick Moore.

The nineteenth century fashion statements can be bought for £50 and have increased in popularity due to a resurgence of the "geeky" image.

Their popularity follows a rise in sales of plain glass spectacles and celebrities such as BBC Radio 1"s Fearne Cotton seen wearing old "NHS-style" glasses.

Britney Spears was recently spotted in oversized, thick-rimmed, "Thunderbirds-style" spectacles.
