The importance of using contact lenses made by a reputable manufacturer has been highlighted by one expert.
Thomas Steinemann, associate professor of ophthalmology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, US, said that illegal contact lenses with no known place of origin can permanently damage the eye.
He pointed out that anybody who wears contact lenses should ensure they have been cleared to do so by a medical professional and only buy from a reputable supplier or manufacturer.
"Many people think they don"t need a prescription for decorative lenses. In fact, permanent eye damage can occur from over-the-counter lenses. Any type of contact lens is a medical device that requires a prescription and proper fitting," Dr Steinemann said.
Recently, Kate Fielding, director of communications and information for the General Optical Council, noted that eye tests are vital to people"s healthcare routines and should be regularly undertaken.
