People who wear contact lenses have been warned not to expose their face in areas with falling ash from the Icelandic volcano.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has stressed that it has issued advice to contact lens wearers stating that they should aim to stay indoors if at all possible, or remove them if they have to go outdoors.
As well as people with respiratory problems, the HPA said that contact lens wearers are among the most high-risk demographic and should therefore follow the organisation"s recommendations.
An accompanying article from the NHS also advised people who wear contact lenses to monitor the situation if the area in which they live is one affected by falling ash and watch out for symptoms such as runny noses or stinging eyes.
However, the NHS stated: "The amount of ash that may reach the ground in the UK is likely to be small and not enough to cause serious harm."
