TV host Alastair Stewart, who helmed last week"s first election debate between the leaders of three main UK political parties, has confessed that he did not wear contact lenses during the event, and made an error as a result.
Speaking to the Times, Stewart said that he feared that his eyes may suffer under the lights of the cameras, but instead ended up telling people the wrong day for transmission of the debate for the devolved regions.
"I wasn"t wearing contact lenses, because I feared that my eyes would dry up, and misread Tuesday and Thursday. I got a right telling off," he told the newspaper.
However, the host added that overall he felt the debate went very well and was impressed with his own performance, particularly for a first attempt.
He is not the only person to suffer under the spotlight from not wearing his contact lenses in recent weeks, as golfing legend Jack Nicklaus confessed that he could not see where his ball landed after hitting the opening shot at the Masters tournament in the US.
