People who wear contact lenses have been given tips on how to keep them safe and avoid the risk of infection.
The Massachusetts Society of Optometrists (MSO) has advised people to avoid using tap water to store tie contact lenses as in some areas the minerals in the liquid can be damaging.
Instead, the organisation recommended that people use the appropriate contact lens solution or, if that is unavailable, bottled water.
"Only fresh solution should be used to clean and store contact lenses. Never re-use old solution. Contact lens solution must be changed according to the manufacturer"s recommendations, even if the lenses are not used daily," MSO advised.
It also recommended that people replace any storage cases for the contact lenses every three months to keep them fresh and free from infection.
Further contact lens safety tips were recently issued by Mark Evans, the director of YouKnowIt.com, who said that people who wear contact lenses need to ensure they take time when inserting and removing them, while always using official products from respectable manufacturers.
