The hit Twilight novels and movies have not only spawned a legion of teenage fans, but also started a trend for wearing coloured contact lenses, it has been claimed.

According to the Sun, students at a US high school have taken to wearing the contact lenses and dressing up as either werewolves or vampires according to their allegiance to the two love rivals Jacob and Edward.

Bill Hill, headteacher of Brandeis High School in San Antonio, Texas, where the craze appears to have begun, said that the students do not appear to be posing any kind of risk to themselves or each other.

"They walk down the hallways swishing their tails. It"s a bit different from the school gangs of my youth - but they don"t seem troublesome," he told the newspaper.

Recently, actor Jackie Earle Haley revealed that coloured contact lenses helped him to transform into the iconic role of Freddy Krueger in the remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street.
