People buying contact lenses must ensure the products are bought from a reputable seller, according to one expert.
Melanie Pickett, contact lens expert at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute at the Indiana University School of Medicine, told Health Canal that products purchased from a disreputable supplier could have lasting consequences.
She pointed out the recent clamour to buy the round contact lenses popularised by Lady Gaga has seen many young girls buy products from websites without first checking their safety.
"While young girls may be drawn to the look achieved with the lenses – that of a very large iris with only a little of the white of the eye showing – it"s essential that an eye care professional assist with the proper fit of any contact lenses," she explained.
Ms Pickett added that the use of tight lenses can decrease the amount of oxygen that reaches the eye, causing abnormal blood vessel growth in the cornea, which can be irreversible.
