Sales of contact lenses continued to grow at a "modest rate" in 2009, according to the latest study conducted in the Netherlands.
A report carried out by Euromonitor International entitled Contact Lenses in Netherlands provided the latest retail sales data from the last four years, identifying the sectors driving growth.
In addition, it identifies the leading companies brands and notes how key factors influencing the market, such as new product developments, distribution and pricing issues, will change the sector in the run up to 2014.
The company stated: "Sales of contact lenses grew modestly in 2009 despite the economic downturn. Apart from some specialised niches, such as coloured lenses, contact lenses are viewed as functional products, an essential purchase rather than a luxury."
Recently, the company"s Belgian study revealed that monthly disposable contact lenses remain the product of choice in the country, with the size and shape of the market continuing to grow.
