Anybody buying contact lenses must first ensure the products are safe and being bought from a reputable source, one expert has warned.
Dr. James Salz, clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of Southern California, told News Ok that people who purchase lenses which are not being sold by a recognised firm are placing themselves in danger.
In addition, the expert pointed out that the products are unlikely to be the correct size, recommending that any purchases are only made after an eyecare professional has been consulted.
His comments add to the controversy which has arisen after thousands of young women turned to disreputable online retailers to buy the products after seeing Lady Gaga sport so-called "circle lenses" in the video for Bad Romance.
"The lenses aren"t radically different from the older coloured contacts used for years to change people"s eye color, except that before, the contacts weren"t also trying to enlarge the color of the iris," Dr Salz said.
