It is essential that any contact lenses people buy have been prescribed and fitted by a professional, one industry body has advised.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the world"s largest association of eye physicians and surgeons, warned that the best way of avoiding injury or infection is to ensure that an expert has fitted lenses and that the products have been bought from a reputable supplier.
It follows the publication of a study in the July 26th issue of the journal Pediatrics, which showed that the majority of medical device-related injures among young people involve the improper buying and fitting of contact lenses.
"Even under the best supervision, injury and infections can occur. That is why it is imperative that all contact lenses must be fitted by an eye care professional," the AAO said.
It added that any child experiencing pain, burning, redness, tears or sensitivity to light while wearing any type of contact lenses should be referred to an ophthalmologist.
