The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) has issued a warning to people purchasing decorative contact lenses online to ensure they are buying from a reputable supplier.
Along with its partners, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) and the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists (CLAO), the AAO is advising consumers to carefully research any organisations selling decorative contact lenses online to make sure the products they vend are official.
"Purchasing any contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional can cause serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss," the AAO states.
The warning comes after ophthalmologist Kruy Arv Pors, of Preah Ang Doung in Phnom Penh, said that people considering investing in coloured contact lenses will find that they can be an excellent means of changing their appearance but they need to exhibit extra care when wearing the products.
