As people across the planet prepare to celebrate Halloween by wearing coloured contact lenses, more experts have stepped into the debate about why doing so could be very dangerous.
Dr Thomas Steinemann, an ophthalmologist with MetroHealth Medical Center and the American Academy of Opthalmology, told CBS that any decorative or coloured contact lenses need to be purchased from an eyecare professional.
Furthermore, these must be prescribed by an eyecare professional to ensure they are the right size and shape for a person"s eyeball, the expert noted.
Dr Steinemann told the news provider: "It"s more than a piece of costume jewellery. This is a medical device - one size does not fit all. Even though the lens is not correcting your vision, your eye shape is very different from the next person."
It comes after Dr Terry Blair, an optometrist with the University Vision Centre in West El Paso, told ABC-7 that there is nothing wrong with wearing decorative contact lenses as long as people purchase them from a reputable company.
