Many people do not realise the potential dangers of nearsightedness, also known as myopia, a number of experts have claimed.
In a piece published on Today Online, Dr Leonard Ang, the medical director of the Eye and Cornea Transplant Centre and Premium Lasik Surgery Clinic, said that myopia is a major problem that can worsen significantly if not addressed when people are young.
His concerns were backed up by Dr Earl Smith, dean of the College of Optometry at the University of Houston, who noted: "People often think nearsightedness is not an important condition, because it can be easily corrected with contact lenses or spectacles."
However, the specialist pointed out that the "structural changes" caused by myopia put the patient at risk of other serious eye conditions such as glaucoma, which can lead to blindness.
