The best way of keeping the eyes in good condition is to eat a varied diet which includes plenty of fruit and vegetables, one expert on the subject has commented.
Dharmesh Patel, chairman of the Eyecare Trust, a charity which raises awareness of all aspects of eye health, said that other healthy lifestyle choices such as not smoking and monitoring a person"s weight can both be ways of maintaining good vision.
"If you are overweight your risk of suffering sight-threatening eye conditions such as macular degeneration or cataracts increases significantly - exercise regularly and have regular sight tests," he advised.
Mr Patel pointed to the Eyecare Trust"s own tips, which recommend that people should have their eyes tested at least once every two years to ensure they are in good condition.
A diet containing foods which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help to prevent age-related macular degeneration, according to a recent study published by the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
