New contact lenses which monitor people"s health may soon be commonplace, it has been claimed.
According to a recent article in an issue of New Scientist, new types of lenses may be able to change the way in which people go about their daily lives, after a series of studies by Babak Parviz at the University of Washington in Seattle.
He created a prototype contact lens containing a single red LED which may be able to monitor glucose levels in diabetes sufferers and even lead to other health-monitoring properties.
The expert explained that there is still a lot of testing to be done to determine the efficacy of the lenses, but it is hoped that the technology could be used to develop lenses with 3D optics.
Also recently, it was reported that new types of contact lenses could potentially lead to people being able to monitor different aspects of the environment while driving.
