Parents have been warned about the dangers of not treating underlying vision problems in their offspring, as these can develop into severe conditions and even result in sight loss.
Dr Intizar Hussain, chairman of the Prevention of Blindness Trust, told Gulf News that weak eyesight in children is a strong sign that they will develop vision problems or have an early stage disorder.
He warned that it is therefore vital to address these issues before they progress into something worse.
"Eye check-ups should be a yearly feature in our health planning and permission to adopt certain professions like driving should be linked with normal eyesight," the expert told the news provider.
However, a study carried out by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health recently suggested that the rate of age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss on the planet, among US adults has decreased in recent years.
