Big-eyed contact lenses "should be avoided"

Contact lenses which artificially enlarge the size of the iris have been condemned by experts after some girls were submitted to hospital with infections.

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists warned that any contact lenses purchased online should only be bought from a reputable supplier with a proven track record.

It made the comments after four girls were admitted to Phra Nang Klao hospital with infections stemming from wearing unofficial cosmetic contacts, known as 'big-eyed' lenses.

"Despite being classed as medical equipment, people continue to use them irresponsibly, which can lead to serious infection of the eyes," the Bangkok Post reported the college as saying.

Recently, the Irish Independent's Health and Living supplement pointed out that dirty contact lenses can lead to problems such as eye infections.

The source said that contact lens wearers have to safeguard their eye health by maintaining high standards of hygiene at all times.
