Johnson& Johnson has revealed that its Acuvue Advance plus brand contact lenses have received the Seal of Acceptance for Ultraviolet Absorbing Contact Lenses from the American Optometric Association's (AOA) Commission on Ophthalmic Standards.
The specifications are in accordance with published standards of the American National Standards Institute and International Standards Organization (ISO), noted Sheila Hickson-Curran, director of medical affairs at Vistakon, a division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care.
She added: "Not all contact lens lines offer UV protection and, of those that do, not all provide similar absorption levels."
According to Johnson & Johnson, its UV contact lenses offer "the highest level of UV-blocking available", blocking more than 90 per cent of UVA rays and 99 per cent of UVB rays.
Last year, a study conducted by Johnson & Johnson found that 75 per cent of contact lens wearers would be willing to pay more for lenses with built-in UV protection, opticianonline.net reported.
