Contact lens wearers told of unique femtosecond laser

By Adrian Galbreth

Brits who use contact lenses may soon be able to benefit from a new system being developed in partnership by Bausch + Lomb and Technolas Perfect Vision GmbH (TPV).

That is because the pair have came up with the first femtosecond laser that is capable of performing both refractive and cataract procedures through a single platform.

As part of the deal, leading ophthalmology laser brand TPV will develop and manufacture the unique piece of technology within its Munich facilities.

Well-known global eye health company Bausch + Lomb will then use its expertise and capabilities in the industry to distribute the laser to markets worldwide, allowing contact lens wearers to benefit from the technology.

Robert Grant, chief executive officer and president of Bausch + Lomb Surgical, commented: "This is the first of many new technologies we are pursuing focused on enhancing a physician’s ability to improve patient outcomes."

Meanwhile, it was recently revealed that researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center in the US were closing in on a cure of age-related macular degeneration by transplanting adult stem cells.
