Contact lens wearers "must be careful" with makeup

It is important for women who wear contact lenses to be very careful when handling and applying makeup, according to a new study.

Research carried out by experts at the Kinki University in Osaka, Japan, has found that oil-based makeup and cleansers need particularly careful handling if women are to avoid infection and the instructions on contact lens packaging must therefore be closely adhered to.

Junko Tsukiyama, from the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine at Kinki University, said the study showed that oil-based cosmetics are "easily absorbed" onto the surface of soft silicone hydrogel lenses not treated with plasma.

"Deformation occurred in all these contact lenses except in those that had plasma-treated lens surfaces. Contact lenses with plasma treatment offer superior resistance to deformation," the Philippine Star reports the study"s principal investigator as saying.

A recent contact lens warning was issued by ophthalmologist Natasha Lim, who works in a private practice, who told the Straits Times that female contact lens wearers need to be very careful when applying makeup to minimise the risk of infection.
