Though everybody has a risk of developing an eye problem at some point, some people are more at risk than others and need to take steps to safeguard their vision, one expert has stated.
According to Anna Turvey, superintendent optician at a large high street Opticians, older people in particular should be going for regular check-ups to test their vision, as they are at higher risk of developing conditions such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Generally, healthcare professionals will inform people if they need to get their eyes checked more frequently than every couple of years, which is the normal recommendation.
"People who might need to go more frequently are people who are over 70, or people who have a family history of an eye condition for example," Ms Turvey added.
Recently, specialists at Columbia University Medical Center in the US revealed that they are currently at work on a new cure for AMD, which is one of the leading causes of blindness on the planet.
