There are some "fantastic bargains" to be found on the internet from clothing to contact lenses, it was suggested this week.
Particularly during the current credit crunch, consumers can find products in places and shops they might not usually be able to find, said Tony Neat, managing director of Get Safe Online.
"The internet is a fantastic place ... opportunities are there," he explained.
Some advantages to buying via the web can include the choice to buy in bulk and shop at any time of the day or night.
However, shopping online should always be undertaken with certain security checks in place, such as installing computer spyware and using a password-protected connection, Mr Neat added.
People may also want to make sure they always log out of sites, as this can minimise the chance for fraud.
Get Safe Online is a joint initiative aimed at helping consumers and small businesses take suitable precautions online.
