Eye make-up can still sparkle even when counting the pennies, make-up artists have said.
Laura Mercier make-up artist Siobhan Trow told the Manchester Evening News that eyeliner was a good way to turn a daytime look to an evening one.
She suggested Boots brands for inexpensive "instant glamour" and Rimmel for budget mascaras such as Sexy Curves.
Suzanne Showman, who has made up actresses for Coronation Street and Emmerdale, added that glitter eyeshadow from Barry M is inexpensive and brightly coloured.
Ms Showman also urged women to curl their eyelashes.
It is possible to wear contact lenses at the same time as make-up, with essortment.com giving advice on how to do so.
If possible, wearers should put make-up on before inserting lenses, as this prevents them having to be taken out and cleaned should any cosmetics get into the eye.
Waterproof eyeliner and mascara are also recommended.
