New operation "can change eye colour permanently"

New operation "can change eye colour permanently"

For years, people wishing to change the colour of their eye have been forced to wear coloured contact lenses, but one surgeon is claiming that he can change people's eye colour forever with a simple procedure.

According to Dr Gregg Homer, from Stroma Medical, which is a clinical equipment company based in California, the treatment can turn brown eyes blue in an instant.

The process - known as Lumineyes – works by using a laser remove the brown pigment melanin from the upper layer of the iris, which only takes around 20 seconds, with results visible within two weeks.

However, the process is irreversible due to the melanin being unable to grow back, meaning people who change their mind will have to wear coloured contact lenses to revert back to their original eye colour.

Dr Homer told KTLA Morning News that the procedure will cost around £3,000 to perform when it becomes available worldwide in around 18 months.

"A blue eye is not opaque, you can see deeply into it, while a brown eye is very opaque. I think there is something very meaningful about this idea of having open windows to the soul," he added.
