Make 2012 the year you clean up your contact lens habits

When it comes to New Year's resolutions, most people vow to eat healthier or hit the gym.

However, one expert notes that many people should also pay attention to their eyes when looking ahead to 2012.

Dr John Henhan, optometrist at Spectrum Eyecare, writes on the Citizen's website that people should make an effort to stop sleeping in their sunglasses - a bad habit that can seriously damage the eyes.

He notes that sleeping in contact lenses has been shown to be the number one risk factor for serious complications linked to the eyewear.

Contact lens wearers should also make sure to throw away their contacts after extended wear, as keeping them for too long is a major risk for nasty eye infections.

The reason for this is that as the contact lens ages, it is less able to provide enough oxygen to the eye's surface - which is damaging to the eye.

It is also a good idea to get a new contact lens case every time you buy a bottle of contact lens solutions, as older cases are breeding grounds for bacteria.
