When out shopping for make-up, contact lens wearers should look for specific products such as oil-free moisturisers, to avoid affecting their eyewear.

Opt for oil free moisturisers, advises the American Optometric Association, and never have such products on your hands when handling contact lenses, as these could create a film on the surface.

Foundations, on the other hand, should be water-based, hypo-allergenic liquid products. Cream make-up could leave a film on the lenses.

Pay attention to make-up around the eyes themselves, especially when it comes to mascara.

Contact lens wearers should avoid lash-extending mascara, which has fibres which can irritate the eyes.

Waterproof mascara is another one that can cause problems, as it cannot easily be removed and could stain soft contact lenses.

It is also vital to keep false eyelash cement, nail polish and remover, perfume and cologne away from the lashes as they could potentially damage the lenses.
