A number of eye care experts gathered together in the US to discuss methods of protecting the safety of contact lens wearers.
The American Optometric Association (AOA) and the US Food and Drug Administration"s (FDA) Centre for Devices and Radiological Health co-sponsored the two-day event in St Louis.
At the gathering, experts discussed the need for tests for contact lens care products to include a parasite that exists in soil and water.
The AOA wants tests to be expanded in this regard to offer better protection to contact lens wearers.
Experts also discussed the issue of improving tests in order to emulate the reality of contact lens wearing, for example if patients do not follow instructions properly.
Mary Beth Rhomberg of the FDA said: "Contact lenses are among the safest forms of vision correction, however, it"s important to remember that contact lenses are medical devices."
According to Acuvue, eye infections are not common for contact lens wearers.
It says health issues are usually caused by not caring for lenses properly.
