Tears "could be used to assess suitability for extended wear contact lenses"

A study is underway in the US to try to find out whether a person could use extended wear contact lenses by testing their tears.

Lucy Kehinde, a researcher at the University of Alabama, told wkowtv.com that the proteins in tears can show whether the eye is healthy, especially cytokines.

She explained how subjects are collecting their tears over the course of a month for the cytokines to be analysed, with the hope of finding ways to identify how well someone would wear contact lenses for extended periods.

In addition, the research may offer insights into dry eyes and help develop means of treating them.
