Can barbecues melt contact lenses?

Watching charcoal burn in a barbecue grill will not melt your contact lenses. The rumor, which has many variations and is commonly shared on social media, is completely false.

Contact Lenses are sterilized by autoclaving up to 121 degree Celsius, and that isn’t enough to melt them. Of course, if your face reaches even half of that, you are going to have some major problems.

The rumor

Why urban legends like this are shared on Facebook and email chain letters is a story for another day. As for the rumor itself, it usually reads like this:

A 21 year old girl had worn a pair of contact lenses during a barbecue party.(An event or meal at which food is cooked outdoors over an open grill or fire) While barbecuing she stared at the fire charcoals continuously for 2-3 minutes.

After a few minutes, She started to scream for help and moved rapidly, jumping up and down. No one in the party knew why she was doing this? Then she admitted into the Hospital, the doctor said she'll be blind permanently because of the contact lenses that she had worn.

Contact lenses are made by plastics, and the heat from the charcoal melted her contact lenses.

or while COOKING...!

The facts

The fact is, contact lenses aren’t going to melt to your eye or cornea while hanging out and cooking hot dogs. In fact, firefighters wear contacts. If you wear contact lenses, you are perfectly fine to sit by a fire, watch the grill, or cook to your heart’s desire without fear of going blind.
