Good To Know
Do Toric Contact Lenses Correct Astigmatism?
Yes. If you have astigmatism your corneas will be shaped unevenly and this causes the light entering your eye to warp, your Optometrist will prescribe Toric lenses, these special lenses not only correct your vision but they can alter the way the light enters your eye thereby correcting the effect of your astigmatism, preventing the blurring and distortion astigmatism causes.
Astigmatism can be corrected with Toric lenses either in your glasses or with Toric contact lenses.
Can I Wear Normal Contact Lenses If I Have Astigmatism?
Maybe. Depending on the amount of astigmatism you have will determine whether regular (spherical) contact lenses will correct the astigmatism enough for clear, sharp vision.
Astigmatism is caused by an unevenly shaped cornea and causes the light entering your eye to be distorted so you need a special (Toric) lens to not only correct your vision but to correct the light pathway to the retina to prevent blurring and provide clear sharp vision.
The degree of astigmatism is measured in dioptres, a normal -spherical- contact lens should be able to handle astigmatism up to 0.75 dioptres anything over that and you will need a Toric contact lens.
