People in the US who need vision correction have been urged to look online by one writer.
In a post on his Cheapskate blog on CNET News, Rick Broda pointed out that in the US there are a number of online stores which sell glasses at very low prices.
Although acknowledging that buying glasses over the internet means not being able to try them on first or get assistance with the fitting Mr Broda said that the costs are "a fraction of what you"d pay locally".
Earlier this month, UK consumer watchdog Which? said that it is cheaper to buy contact lenses online than in stores.
Optician Online reported the results of the research.
Which? urged people to shop around to find the best deals, looking in internet and bricks-and-mortar stores.
The consumer group found that Acuvue Oasys contact lenses were cheaper when bought online than from a traditional shop.
