Online contact lens buying "affecting the industry"

Online contact lens buying "affecting the industry"

More people are choosing to buy contact lenses online, new research has shown.

According to a study by Optician Online and the Association of Contact Lens Manufacturers, one-fifth of bricks-and-mortar practitioners are reporting that fewer people are buying contact lenses from them since it became easy to do so online.

The ease with which people can buy contact lenses online was said to have influenced the industry more than the recession.

In addition, a fifth of practitioners do not talk to patients about contact lenses unless the patient initiates the discussion, Optician Online reported.

Recently, the Tampa Bay Business Journal reported that Unilens has named disposable contact lenses as one reason for its rise in sales.

It cited the C-Vue disposable contact lenses brand as a key cause for the two per cent increase in sales that it saw in the latest fiscal quarter.

Bausch & Lomb, a licensee of Unilens, also experienced an increase in sales from its licensed products.
