A man who lost his eyesight due to a progressive condition and was unable to work will release his first novel in the new year, reports the Carnoustie Guide & Gazette.

Gordon Anthony"s eye condition caused him to lose his eyesight, so much so that he was unable to carry on with his job and so he decided to write a novel instead.

The book – In the Shadow of the Wall – will go on sale on January 9th 2010.

It is set in Roman times and features a young warrior who is captured by the Romans at Hadrian"s Wall. His memories of a childhood sweetheart keep him going through the adversity he suffers.

The book allowed Mr Anthony to combine his interest in history with his Open University classics degree.

He told the news provider: "I suppose I am a bit of a stickler for accuracy but I wanted this book to read as a story with an authentic background, rather than a history lesson."

An estimated 500,000 people in the UK suffer from age-related macular degeneration – the most prevalent cause of blindness.
