A talented footballer who was blinded in one eye after being attacked with a bottle in Glasgow could receive a £500,000 payout.

John McTier could receive the compensation five years after being attacked by a gang of six teenagers.

He has received support from the Professional Foot¬ballers" Association Scotland.

The young left winger needed numerous operations but returned to football only to find that his game had been ruined.

Mr McTier said that his balance was badly affected, meaning that his dreams of being a professional player were over.

He told the Daily Record: "I still get upset and very emotional. I can"t hide it sometimes. I don"t want to cry but I can"t stop it because I have no tear duct in my left eye after the attack."

A 13-year-old American footballer who suffered a freak eye injury recently had a special kind of contact lens called a crystalens implanted, which helped him return to the field, according to khon2.com.
