Contact lenses "are safe when used correctly"

Contact lenses are a safe and effective form of vision enhancement when stored and handled correctly, it has been claimed.

Dr Christine Sindt, chair of the American Optometric Association"s contact lens and cornea section, said that it is important to follow manufacturer instructions and ensure any products are purchased from a reputable contact lenses supplier.

The expert, who is also an associate professor of clinical ophthalmology in the department of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the University of Iowa, explained that care is a priority.

"Contact lenses are among the safest forms of vision correction when patients follow the proper care and wearing instructions provided by their eye doctor. When not used as directed, however, the consequences can be serious," she noted.

Speaking to CBS recently, Dr Carol Karp of the Bascom Palmer Eye Clinic pointed out that people should not adopt a "one size fits all" approach when on the hunt for themed or special effect contact lenses .
