FDA issues contact lenses warning

By Alexa Kaczka

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has become the latest body to warn people about the potential effects of wearing unofficial contact lenses.

According to the FDA, people who wear contact lenses which have not been prescribed by an eye care professional run the risk of developing an eye infection or even permanently damaging their vision.

It comes as thousands of people worldwide invest in themed contact lenses ahead of Halloween in order to dress up as movie monsters and other characters.

The organisation advised people to conduct research into the supplier to ascertain whether the products they are selling are legitimate and to make sure that the products are the correct prescription for their eyes.

It comes after Dr Christine Sindt, chair of the American Optometric Association's contact lens and cornea section, said that it is important to follow manufacturer instructions and ensure any products are purchased from a reputable contact lenses supplier.
