Early detection of eye disease "is highly important"

Detecting eye disease at an early stage is highly important, as it can help experts to target the condition and reduce the chances of it developing, one expert has observed.

When caught early, it is possible to cure some eye conditions completely, while for more serious conditions experts can curb progression and enable the patient to enjoy greater quality of life, said Sarah Zerbib, head of marketing and PR at the International Glaucoma Association.

She explained: "Early detection is essential because the sooner it is diagnosed the sooner it can be treated via eye drops, laser treatment or surgery, with the objective to stop or slow down the progress of the condition and prevent any, or further, damage to the optic nerve."

However, the expert noted that glaucoma cannot be cured, therefore early diagnosis and compliance to treatment is the only way to prevent blindness.
