Proper hygiene "must be maintained" by contact lens wearers

It is important that contact lens wearers follow good hygiene practices in order to eliminate the risk of infection, one expert has stated.

Speaking to the Hindustan Times, Dr Saroj Sahdev, professor and head of the ophthalmology department at KEM Hospital, said that people should also avoid buying from unlicensed contact lens vendors.

People who follow manufacturer instructions, buy lenses from an established retailer and observe good hygiene practices will find that they have no trouble.

"There are several people who use lenses for cosmetic purposes and do so without proper medical supervision or advice," he added, explaining that people need a prescription to use the products and should not do so without one.

Recent contact lens safety advice was offered by Dr Jamuna Pai, speaking to DNA India, who said it is vital that people aiming to look after their eyes take measures to ensure their eyecare regimens are as hygienic as possible.
