"Read the instructions" when switching contact lenses

People considering switching contact lenses or using special decorative ones have been reminded to ensure the read the instructions when using the products.

Coloured contact lenses are perfectly safe as long as they are purchased form reputable organisation, said Harold Wagener, a doctor of optometry at Pocono Eye Associates in East Stroudsburg.

He told the Times Herald-Record that in many cases decorative and coloured contact lenses operate differently to normal ones, and people need to be aware of this.

"Here"s the thing - even if you already wear contacts and know how to insert them and care for them, you don"t have any idea what type of material the decorative ones are made of, or the oxygen permeability," Mr Wagener told the website.

People can help to reduce the element of risk by always following manufacturer instructions and purchasing the lenses from a trusted and reputable retailer.
