London Marathon runners "should wear contact lenses"

London Marathon runners "should wear contact lenses"

People running the upcoming Virgin London Marathon but require vision correction have been advised to wear contact lenses for optimum performance in the race.

That is the recommendation of sports vision expert Gavin Rebello, who said that contact lenses give people much clearer spatial awareness when contending with the curbs, cobbles and general hustle and bustle of the London Marathon.

He explained: "Contact lenses are really comfortable. There are a lot of people that don't think about trying contact lenses, but the modern day ACUVUE lenses are so comfortable. You put them in and you just don't feel that they are there."

As the ACUVUE range can cover around 90 per cent of glasses prescriptions, even people with the astigmatism can wear them and take part in active pursuits, the expert added.

Although one barrier to people trying contact lenses is learning how to put them in or take them out, Mr Rebello assured people that it is far easier than they may believe.

"From a female perspective it is just like doing eyeliner. If you can do eyeliner then you can learn to put a contact lens in," he added.

For men, it is simply a case of hand-eye coordination, so it is "very easy" to learn how to put them in, the expert concluded.
