UK Drivers Desperately Need Eye Check-Ups, Vision Express Says

Vision Express recently said one in four people who got an eye screening at its recent Vision Van event in Birmingham hadn’t had an eye exam since they got their driver’s license. Vision Express believes more work needs to be done to encourage UK drivers to get routine visual check-ups.

Amazingly, about 17 percent of people who went to the Vision Van told doctors this was their first visual screening ever. Volunteers said 81 percent of people who went to the Vision Van were in desperate need of a sight test and 62 percent needed to update their prescription lenses.

Vision Express points out that at least 3,000 UK motorists die every year in car crashes that have poor vision as a contributing factor. Nearly all of these tragic accidents can be avoided by simply getting a yearly visual screening.

For its part, Vision Express organizes events like the Vision Van to show UK citizens how easy it is to get eye exams. Leaders at Vision Express have also created an Our Eye Tests Save Lives initiative to raise awareness of the importance of yearly eye screenings.

All of this data comes from the Commercial Vehicle Show that took place between April 24th and 27th. Founded in 2000, the Commercial Vehicle Show always takes place in Birmingham’s National Exhibition Center.

Vision Express’ Vision Van gives out free eye exams in different UK cities throughout the year.
